The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a hinge joint that connects your jaw bone (mandible) to the temporal bones, which are located at the side of your skull. This joint lets you move your jaw up and down and side-to-side. When this joint is not functioning properly, you may experience pain or difficulty while talking, chewing, and yawning.
Chronic pain can be defined as any pain that persists for 3 months or longer and while not necessarily maladaptive, it often leads to physical decline, limited functional ability and emotional distress. Chronic pain differs from acute pain, a normal sensation that alerts us to possible injury, as chronic pain persists and may arise from an initial injury such as a back sprain or an ongoing cause such as illness. However, there may also be no clear cause. Other health problems such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, decreased appetite, and mood changes often accompany chronic pain. Chronic pain may limit a person’s movements, which can reduce flexibility, strength, and stamina. This difficulty in carrying out important and enjoyable activities can lead to disability and despair. When pain persists in spite of medical treatment, as is the case in chronic pain syndromes, the issues become even more complex.

Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments that help stabilize your ankle become injured. This may occur when the ankle is excessively turned or rotated, overstretching the ligaments. These overstretched ligaments cause the ankle to lose stability, leading to pain and balance issues. Physical therapy can help by restoring joint range of motion, reducing swelling and edema, strengthening to improve stability, and education on ways to avoid re-injury in the future.

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a major ligament of the knee that connects the femur to the tibia. The ACL’s main function is to prevent an anterior translation of the tibia on the femur, providing stability to the knee joint. ACL injuries are one of the most common sports injuries. They are most often seen in high impact sports such as football, basketball, soccer, gymnastics and skiing. The actions that can provoke an injury are sudden changes in direction, jumping, and a direct blow to the knee joint. Injuries can range from an overstretching or a sprain of the ligament to a complete tear of the ACL.

Neurological impairments applies to any condition that is caused by a dysfunction in the brain, spinal column or nervous system resulting in physical and/or psychological symptoms. Symptoms depend on where damage occurs. Areas that control movement, communication, vision, hearing or thinking can be affected. Examples of symptoms may include muscle weakness, poor coordination, loss of sensation, imbalance, vertigo, dizziness and pain.
Many people may not realize how numerous health conditions can be linked to their pelvic floor. That’s why at Cynergy PT, our certified physical therapists, Dr. Laurence Agénor, Dr. Bridgit Shaefer, Dr. Natalie Bravo, Dr. Sarah Brooks, Dr. Chivonne Henriques, Dr. Paris McConnell, Dr. Estella Maritza Mejia, & Dr. Amira Murtazaeva are excited to offer patients the chance to improve the symptoms of all these conditions and more – through Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy.

Vestibular disorders are surprisingly common and can be quite debilitating. It has been reported that as many as 35% of adults aged 40 years or older in the United States have experienced some form of vestibular dysfunction. Patients with vestibular disorders often experience vertigo, dizziness, visual disturbances, instability, and difficulty with balance. The symptoms associated with vestibular dysfunction can impact all aspects of daily life. Fear of movement can lead to decreased endurance, decreased muscular strength, and avoidance of daily activities. The good news is that there are effective methods to reduce or completely eliminate symptoms through vestibular rehabilitation therapy.
Joint and soft tissue injuries can severely limit how you live your life. While you may turn to physical therapy to help you recover without surgery, you may not realize all that can be involved in your treatment program. At Cynergy Physical and Occupational Therapy, we begin your care by discovering the origins of your pain. Your doctor’s notes and imaging reports give us an idea. However, we go beyond what we’re given to better understand how structural issues may be affecting functions like the range of motion in a particular area and how you sit, stand, and walk.
