The name “Brooklyn” evolved from Breuckelen, which was named after a town in the Netherlands. During the 19th century, Brooklyn grew rapidly as an independent city, fueled by shipping, manufacturing, and immigration. A defining milestone came in 1883 with the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, physically connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan.
